In the 18th century, after taking over his wife's family's food and wine store, Matthew Gloag founded Matthew Gloag & Sons in Perth, selling, among other things, whiskies from various distilleries. In 1896, his grandson created his very first Blend. Composed of various single malts, including The Glenrothes, Highland Park, Tamdhu and Macallan, it included over 65% grain whisky. Expecting many hunters to stop in Perth during the hunting season, he named his drink 'The Grouse Brand'. His daughter Philippa designed the label featuring Scotland's iconic animal. The whisky sold so well that, after just a few years, the name 'Famous' was added and 'Brand' dropped. And so it was that this much-loved whisky took the name 'The Famous Grouse', which it still bears today.
