This is the first bottling (First Crop) of the 'Harvest Edition'. It is the second bottling in an annual series of limited bottlings, following Lochlea's 'Sowing Edition'. The whisky was aged in Port Hogsheads, Oloroso Sherry Butts and first-fill ex-Bourbon casks. Like all Lochlea whiskies, it is neither chill-filtered nor colored. The ash-gray and coral-red label reflects summer sunsets and the Ayrshire soil, which changes color to a deep red hue once the barley is harvested.
Lochlea Distillery is an independent single malt distillery based at Lochlea Farm in the heart of Ayrshire. Run by renowned former Laphroaig distillery manager John Campbell, the family farm grows and harvests its own barley, ensuring complete traceability from field to bottle - the only stage of production not currently carried out on the farm is malting, although this will probably soon be the case. Historically, Lochlea is the only distillery where Robert Burns actually lived and worked on the farm from 1777 to 1784.
This bottling is dedicated to the Swiss physician, naturalist, humanist, polyhistorian and encyclopedist Conrad Gessner (1516-1565). In his book 'The History of Four Foot Beats and Serpents', Gessner described and drew the mythical animal Seawolf on page 580. The distillery's current logo is taken from Conrad Gessner's notes.
